First Cross Foundations

Understanding the Cross

The cross is the first step in solving the Rubik's Cube:

  • Forms a '+' shape on one face
  • Matches edge pieces with center colors
  • Creates a foundation for solving corners

Key Concepts

Color Recognition

  • Choose a starting color (traditionally white)
  • Identify matching edge pieces
  • Understand relative positions of centers

Edge Piece Properties

  • Each edge has two colors
  • Must match both colors correctly
  • Can be flipped if needed

Planning Your Cross

The Daisy Method

  1. Form a daisy pattern on top
  2. Align edges with centers
  3. Flip edges down to create cross

Advanced Planning

  • Look for efficient moves
  • Plan multiple pieces at once
  • Minimize unnecessary rotations

Common Patterns

  • Adjacent edges swapped
  • Opposite edges swapped
  • Single edge flipped
  • Multiple edges flipped
