Cube Notation

Basic Moves

Face Turns

  • F: Front face clockwise
  • B: Back face clockwise
  • R: Right face clockwise
  • L: Left face clockwise
  • U: Upper face clockwise
  • D: Down face clockwise

Modifiers

  • ' (Prime): Counterclockwise turn (Example: F')
  • 2: Double turn (Example: F2)

Advanced Notation

Slice Moves

  • M: Middle slice (between L and R)
  • E: Equatorial slice (between U and D)
  • S: Standing slice (between F and B)

Wide Moves

  • Fw: Front two layers
  • Rw: Right two layers
  • Uw: Upper two layers

Reading Algorithms

Example algorithm: R U R' U'

  1. R: Turn right face clockwise
  2. U: Turn upper face clockwise
  3. R': Turn right face counterclockwise
  4. U': Turn upper face counterclockwise

Practice Tips

  • Write out algorithms using proper notation
  • Practice reading and executing algorithms slowly
  • Understand what each notation means visually
